Retired Army Lt Colonel Jerry Ellsworth Holstad, 90, died Friday, 12 May, 2017, at the Glenaire Continuing Care Community, Cary, NC.
Jèrry was born in Whitehall, Wisconsin, on September 3, 1926, the fifth child of Melvin and Lilly Olson Holstad, of Trempealeau County, Wisconsin. He was preceded in death by his 16 year old son, Kennett Wayne, in 1971, his brothers Hiram and John and his sisters Ruby Holstad Mathson and Mavis Holstad Fahrman. Surviving are his wife of 68 years Shirley McCormick Holstad of Fayetteville (NC) and Glenaire; son Gerald Bruce Holstad and his wife Gina, of Cape Carteret, NC; his sister Frances Holstad Eide of Strum, Wi, and several nieces and nephews.
Jèrry entered the U.S. Army in January 1945, and served in the Philippines during World War II. As a young paratrooper he served three years in Japan beginning in October 1945 with the 17th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 11th Airborne Division. He met and married his wife Shirley McCormick Holstad in December 1948 while both were serving in Japan. They travelled the world during Jerry's Army service and in retirement, on cruise ships. Jèrry had a long and distinguished career in Army Aviation, primarily as a pilot and commander of aviation units. His vast flying experience included qualification in 34 different types of airplanes and helicopters. In addition to serving in the Philippines and Japan, his other overseas tours included Cambodia and Puerto Rico. He was a member of the Military Officers Association of America and the Order of Daedalians. He served as an Elder in the First Presbyterian Church in Fayetteville, and two other churches.
A Memorial Service will be held at the Glenaire Retirement Community, 4000 Glenaire Circle, Cary, NC on Thursday 18 May 2017 at 11:00 AM with the Reverend Dr. John W. “Jay” Coker, Jr. The family will receive friends after the Memorial Service at Glenaire.
