Few teams have been able to touch Eau Claire Memorial’s depth this season.

It was no different Wednesday at the Big Rivers Conference boys golf tournament, which the Old Abes won by eight strokes over runner-up Rice Lake at Turtleback Golf Course in Rice Lake.

Memorial junior Matt Fladten shot a 74 to edge Eau Claire North’s John Haselwander and River Falls’ Blake Skogen by one stroke for medalist honors.

“He took advantage of most of his situations and made some big shots,” Old Abes coach Dave Wiltgen said about Fladten.

Memorial’s Billy Peterson, Rice Lake’s Ben Resnick and Chippewa Falls’ Chase Hoople tied for fourth, two strokes back. All five Abes shot 82 or better.

Memorial wrapped up its first conference title since 2009 and will look to return to state for the first time since 2014 when the postseason begins Tuesday at the New Richmond Regional.

Skogen beat out Haselwander for conference player of the year. Also named first-team all-conference were Hoople, Peterson and North’s Logan Comte.
